Why Does it All Seem So Hard?
After spending many years doing “self-help,” and working to figure out my own crazy mind and emotions, I started to wonder…
Why is this so HARD for most of us?
I mean, it’s challenging enough to get up and go to work everyday, pay the bills, keep the kids happy, and keep the car running right… but that’s only PART of life. We ALSO have to deal with the things that we have going on INSIDE of ourselves.
And the question that kept coming up for me was: Why is it so hard to deal with these things we have going on INSIDE… like fear, anxiety, and other psychological challenges?
Well, one of the answers that I came up with is interesting. And it’s something that I think might help YOU deal with some of these same challenges…
You might think the questions I asked above are really talking to you, and really hitting home, that’s because I really have been there. I was that person who would get angry and frustrated with myself and ask myself ‘what the hell is wrong with me?’, I was the person who didn’t want to see anybody socially and kept turning down invitations to go out, but felt sorry for myself when nobody called me to go out. I used to sit on the underground train, going home from work, on Friday nights and look at others on the train secretly wishing I was living their life, they seemed happy, with lots of friends and going out to parties. I couldn’t get organised, I couldn’t get my head together, my thoughts were all over the place, and life just seemed….well…. too much of a hassle.
I struggled for years this way and couldn’t see a way out, I literally thought ‘This is my life, I’m going to be stuck like this for the rest of my life.’, that’s how long these feelings had lasted.
The stress I felt at work was unbelievable. I did have a relatively stressful job, but the way I was feeling I just magnified the stress by a factor of 10. I look back on that job now and think I could do that with my eyes closed now and not feel any stress or anxiety whatsoever.
My relationships all suffered as I was pushing people away from me, and yet I still expected friends and family to visit me.
My confidence was shot to pieces, and I became the very person I didn’t like when I was younger, you know, the person who is really mousy, timid, excessively shy, don’t look you in the eye, almost pleased that you even acknowledge them….I had become that person….that’s not a life!
The worst part was going to the doctor expecting him to cure me and instead I was told I was stressed with symptoms of depression and anxiety and then I was fed with some drugs that would supposedly alleviate these feelings.
The last straw came early one morning. I had been lying in the bath for about an hour, until the water had turned cold. I dragged myself out of the bath and slowly dried myself. I opened the medicine cabinet and took out my dose of pills and put them in my hand….. I just stared at these little white and blue pills….I must have done this for ten minutes…….and then…. I threw them down the sink.
I’d had enough…
No white or blue pill is going to cure me….
I had to cure myself. I was the only person who knew me and I was going to be the person who would fix me. I had a clarity I hadn’t felt in years, a vision for my future. I wasn’t going to live like this any more…I was worth so much more than this.
My quest had begun……
It took me a few years to find a reliable solution…
Jump to today and I honestly could not be living a better life: A beautiful wife, inside and out, two great children, a hyperactive dog, beautiful house, good friends, and a job I love in personal development.
The biggest thing I learned over the years of my quest….
IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT!
We are not given the right tools and information to deal with stresses and strains of everyday life, THERE IS NO INSTRUCTION MANUAL. Yes, medication can help, but medication should only be a short term solution to deal with the symptoms. But, what we need is to deal with the heart of the problem and to eradicate the problem
Honestly, if you’d known me back then you wouldn’t recognize me as the same person today. I am one ordinary person who has managed to find a solution to my problems and I believe what we have come up with can help you too.
The real “Ah-Ha!” moment came for me when I had a simple realization:
I realized that instead of trying to deal with each individual problem IN THE MOMENT… I would get FAR better results if I got my Inner Self issues handled BEFORE I HAD THE PROBLEM IN THE FIRST PLACE.
In other words, instead of dealing with my out-of-control emotions after I already started something and I was already out of control… I needed to make it so my emotions never got out of control IN THE FIRST PLACE.
That one simple shift in thinking changed my focus, took me in a brand-new direction, and ultimately had a major effect on my long-term success… and my success in life.
This new mind set allowed me to see that most of my psychological and emotional challenges were actually SIMILAR to each other… and I realized that if I could fix a major emotional challenge, it would AUTOMATICALLY solve a ton of other problems at the same time.
As you’ve probably noticed, Inner Self challenges can be very SIMILAR to each other. You can actually group them into CATEGORIES…
I’m going to share MY list of Inner Self Categories with you. Read through these, and see if this makes sense to you…
1. Irrational, Uncontrollable Fear
Many of the situations that we get stuck with fit into the category of “caused by fear.” Here are some of the types of fear that we experience… along with how I think they mess us up:
Fear of rejection.
Fear of embarrassment.
Fear of someone else hurting you.
Fear of loss.
2. Constant Anxiety
Anxiety about not being able to cope with things in our lives.
Anxiety about what people are really thinking about us.
Anxiety about the relationships in our lives.
Anxiety about dealing with the kids, bills, and the everyday stuff.
You can’t “handle” situations that bother you… they get to you too much… and they haunt you.
We all have situations that come up in life that “get to us.” But if you’re like me and many others, then you know what it’s like to feel like things just “get to you” a little TOO much. When you can’t handle “normal” situations… then you probably have a problem.
Going into a rage or tizzy when you don’t get “your way.”
As we grow up, we might stop screaming and crying in public when we don’t get “our way,” but that doesn’t mean that the problem has completely gone away. If you’ve experienced getting upset when you don’t get what you want, then this is an area that you need to fix… and soon.
Wanting what you want when you want it, and not accepting reality.
As kids, we used to fantasize about having things go exactly the way we wanted them to… and being able to change reality just by THINKING about it. As we grow up, we don’t entirely give this up. If you tend to not want to accept the reality around you, then I honestly believe this is limiting you… and you need to do something about it.
And what do these three issues have in common? They’re all connected to MATURITY… a process that can be LEARNED (and quickly, if you know how).
4. Unpredictable Emotional Turmoil
Thoughts or events that trigger strong emotions.
Emotions are interesting things. It often seems like they just “come out of nowhere.” And when the strong emotions come, they can COMPLETELY take over. Have you ever screwed up a situation in your life, work, or relationships because you got too emotional? Even worse, did it happen because you couldn’t CONTROL your emotions?
Emotions that distract you from being productive.
Have you ever noticed that when you’re feeling intense emotions, it’s almost IMPOSSIBLE to focus on anything else? Strong emotions take over your entire experience, and even take over your THOUGHTS. If you don’t know how to control strong, persistent emotions, you often wind up not being able to get ANYTHING done.
Events outside of you triggering emotions.
We might call this one “being a small boat in a storm at sea.” If events that are OUTSIDE of you often trigger STRONG emotions, then you’ve probably realized that YOU’RE NOT IN COMPLETE CONTROL of yourself. This can be pretty upsetting all by itself. Well, the good news is that you CAN learn how to control your emotions… and you can learn to “disconnect” your intense emotional responses from things that happen outside of you.
5. Other People Controlling You And Your Life
Others know how to push your buttons, and you don’t know how to stop it.
Have you ever felt like someone else had a “remote control” for your life and emotions? Somehow, they just know how to “push your buttons,” and get whatever they want from you? Get this: It’s YOU that’s giving them control. And if you’re tired of this, then YOU need to learn how to TAKE BACK THE CONTROL of yourself and your life (And I want to teach you exactly how to do this… because taking control of your life will have an INSTANT impact on your success with women).
Feeling low self-esteem combined with resentment because others are “running the show” of your life.
If you’ve experienced this situation where you feel like other people control your life, then you most likely ALSO felt some negative emotions about it. When you’re out of control, you KNOW that something is wrong. And it makes you feel bad about yourself. This is a “negative spiral” that just gets worse and worse. The more you let others control you, the worse it gets. It MUST stop.
Allowing someone else to control you because you think it will get you what you want.
This is a DEAL KILLER when it comes to success with women. Us guys LOVE to try to please women by letting them control us. The problem, of course, is that when a woman actually GETS control, that’s when her ATTRACTION STOPS. If you want to solve this particular problem, then you must literally change the way you THINK… and change your emotional responses.
6. Never Getting An “Instruction Manual” For Your Mind And Emotions
Wanting to understand and learn how your mind and emotions work, but thinking that it might be “dumb.”
When you first learn about “self-help,” a common response is to think that it’s kind of stupid or ridiculous. But one of the funny things about being human is that we don’t come with “instruction manuals.” And worse, we are COMPLEX. I believe that if you want to become EFFECTIVE in life… and if you want to have SUCCESS in life, you MUST learn how your mind and emotions work. You MUST overcome this feeling that it’s “dumb” to improve yourself.
Not knowing where to start, and not wanting to get a degree in psychology to learn.
I can remember when I first started learning about psychology, behavior, and emotions. Man, did it ever seem COMPLICATED. I actually took went to university and gained my degree in psychology… just to try to figure out MY OWN screwed-up mind. One of the big challenges when you’re working to improve yourself is: “Where do I start?” And the other is “How do I learn all this stuff without spending YEARS in college?̵
In a minute, I’m going to tell
you exactly where to start… and exactly how to solve all of these challenges RAPIDLY… no college degree required.
Not having a place where you can get all the information you need.
Finally, if you’ve been working to improve yourself at all, you’ve noticed that no one has really put together an entire “system” for learning how to improve yourself in the area of “psychological and emotional health.” This was one of my own biggest challenges… there just wasn’t a “complete” system for addressing all of my problems. Well, fortunately that is a problem that is in the PAST…
7. Wanting To Get Help, But Not Being Able To ASK For It, And Not Knowing Where To Turn…
Maybe the biggest “Inner Self” challenge of all is realizing that you NEED help… wanting to GET help… but just not being able to ask for it… and not knowing where to turn for it.
We are proud. We don’t want anyone else to know that we’re out of control… hurting… or desperate. We don’t want to ask for help. We don’t even like the THOUGHT of asking for help.
Even more, this stuff that I’m talking about is complex. When you're having an Inner Self problem, the problem itself takes over your awareness… and sometimes makes it seem like the problem won’t ever go away…
Well, there's good news here.
The good news is that I’ve been working on this set of problems MYSELF for a long time… many years, in fact.
When I was going through all that a few years ago there was one thing I kept on doing that made my situation worse. I couldn’t really see it back then, but when I came out of the feelings of stress, and anxiety it suddenly became clear.
I was looking for ways to feel even more stressed, anxious and depressed.
That might sound strange, but if you think about it, it makes a lot of sense.
Think about a time when you felt really happy….I mean really happy. Go ahead and do this just now. Go back and see it as clearly as possible and get in touch with the emotions of being truly happy, really immerse yourself in the glow of happiness and being calm and peaceful.
When we feel happy like this, our minds are set up to make us look for things that make us even more happy and dismiss the things that might make us feel down, stressed and anxious.
Turn that on it’s head. When we are feeling anxious, stressed and depressed our minds have almost cut a groove into this way of thinking. Pretty soon these feelings turn into a belief that ‘I am’ a stressed, anxious or depressed person. When the mind sets up a belief like this, it looks for ways to verify this belief over and over again, which makes us spiral down even further into these feelings of despair.
We don’t realize we are even doing this as it’s done at an unconscious level. However when we become conscious of the fact that our minds are looking for ways to make us feel more of the same feelings, we can begin to take back some control.
So, right now, think of something that you are truly grateful for…..
It could be anything: grateful for having a roof over your head, grateful for being able to sit down at a computer and read this, grateful for your health, grateful for your kids, your pet, having a job, having a family…anything at all to make you feel grateful.
Doing this exercise three times per day for one minute will stop your mind cutting that groove of hopelessness even further and will help you to finally start taking control of your mind again. But it’s only the first step….
Remember the movie “The Matrix”… The Cool Keanu Reeves movie?
Do you remember what Neo was doing for most of the movie?
He wasn’t looking for the MATRIX Itself… no.
He was looking how to figure out how to use his mind to be able to function well in the Matrix…
Remember when Morpheus says to Neo: “This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.”
Morpheus knew that it was going to take a lot to convince Neo that his beliefs about the world were his own making...and I am asking you to accept that the world you live in is created in your mind, or rather your interpretation of the world is.
There is another scene with Morpheus talking to Neo:
Morpheus: What is the Matrix? Control. The Matrix is a computer-generated dream world built to keep us under control in order to change a human being into this.[holds up a Duracell battery]
Neo: No, I don't believe it. It's not possible.
Morpheus: I didn't say it would be easy, Neo. I just said it would be the truth.
So why is this important? And why am I going on and on about this movie?
Because this is EXACTLY what most of us go through in life. We accept a reality that we feel we have no control over, when in actual fact we are the controllers…
It’s the very same mistake I made when I was first trying to learn all of this.
I see people trying to solve their problems with techniques…
when they have problems that can never be solved with techniques.
From firsthand experience and from teaching others, I’ve learned that a technique will almost never work for someone who doesn’t have their Inner Self issues handled.

How I found The Solution...
My quest took me on the path of meditation....

I decided for Transcendental Meditation. I went along to a meeting and met a strange woman who told me about her practice and how she would help me, and how I would be given a special mantra to say and how it would only cost me £640 ($1,100)...What! I decided to buy a book instead but it didn't give me the techniques and the special mantra, it was all very secretive.
So I decided to try Breathe Meditation at home, really simple stuff, no special mantra, no cost, but after a few months I kept on asking myself Is this working? Am I sitting in the correct position, am I concentrating hard enough, I am concentrating too hard, do I pay attention to my thoughts or let them go...so many questions.
After a few months of trying various techniques and going to classes I came across something called Guided Meditations....Great, I could focus on someone's voice and get the benefit of relaxing at the same time - which is what meditation is - focused attention whilst relaxing in the moment.
I done this for a few months and the difference I felt was amazing: I was more relaxed at work, less stressed, I didn't feel anxious anymore, and was starting to accept many more invitations to go out and I didn't feel socially awkward...I'd cracked it....or so I thought....
When I got more into the practice of meditation I noticed the guided meditations I had weren't very professional, the voice would grate on me a little, the music was too intrusive or they were just too long, some of them 40 minutes...
